Thought for the week – Nigel Mansfield

Many families invariably have some rift or other which has never been properly addressed. It can go on for years. As Christians it offends the name of Christ, that we bear, if we cannot forgive. A helpful book on the subject is the ‘Language of Apology’ which flags up 5 things that need to be said and meant – when we set about apologising. All or some of the following:- (a) “I was sorry.” (b)... [Read More..]

What’s special about the battle of Trafalgar and Scotland ?  Trafalgar Day on 21st October celebrated the Battle of Trafalgar when Admiral Nelson was victorious in 1805. Last year, with this in mind, the Herald newspaper published a short letter on 23 0ctober 2008 from Bruce Lindsay Lt Cmndr RN (rtd). Here is an extract:  “It is of interest to note that Nelson’s triumph at Trafalgar, on his... [Read More..]

The story is told about the Mum visiting her young son after a tonsil operation.  She was surprised to find him sitting up, all smiles. When asked how he was, he replied that having spoken to God, who performed the operation, all was well and he felt good. When his Mum said that God wouldn’t have done the operation the boy explained that when he went into the operating theatre there were 3 angels... [Read More..]

Our wellbeing is very much influenced by the quality of love and friendship that surrounds us, and this is so evident at celebrations of weddings and their anniversaries, of birthdays, and of course at Christmas. This is particularly so at 21st, 50th and other “big O” birthdays and perhaps even more so at the “big” wedding anniversaries like silver, ruby and gold. Liz and I have had the pleasure... [Read More..]

My niece has just asked me to read 1 Corinthian 13: 4 -7 at her wedding later this month.  I never tire of hearing its simple wisdom on love.  But, there are many signs of our complicated struggles with ‘love’. In Scotland each year nearly 13,000 couples divorce, affecting about 50,000 children.  That’s 35 everyday of the year.  Those of us who work with the often awful consequences of divorce... [Read More..]

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – 23rd. August 2009 – Helen Caldwell Ecclesiastes Ch. 3 v1 “Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses.” A few weeks ago I was watching “Songs of Praise” on the BBC and one of the guests was Chris de Burg, singing “There is a Season”. This song brought to mind the above noted verse from Ecclesiastes and also reminded me of the... [Read More..]

WORDS FROM JEREMIAH CHAPTER 31 VERSE 8. “I will bring them from the north, and gather them from the ends of the Earth. They will come back a great nation”. These words from Jeremiah come from a time when the people of Israel had been scattered and is God’s promise that He will bring them back to their own country. Here in Scotland, 2009 has been declared the “Year of Homecoming”. The word... [Read More..]

Thought for the Week – Welcome

One thing we enjoy about a holiday away is to go to another church !. Things are always done differently and there is usually something new to learn. In July we went to church in Edmonton, and enjoyed the service benefiting from what was said and the hymns that were sung, several of them new to us. After the service there was tea and coffee at the back of the church but no-one came up to speak to us.... [Read More..]

Thought for the week – Beauty surrounds us -Sheila Penny

I love my garden and often thank God for the beauty that surrounds us every day.   I guess if I have a favourite time it would be the spring time because of the expectation. The shoots coming through the ground and watching them grow little by little into the most beautiful plants and flowers.  The colours are amazing the texture and shape always a mystery to us.   In full summer the garden becomes... [Read More..]

Thought for the week – God uses all sorts of means to teach us!

Recently I’ve had some time on my hands and have been doing a bit of crocheting. It struck me how all these old-fashioned skills which are dying out (like darning, turning collars, dressmaking, knitting) could be so useful in our ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ society. If only we had learnt them from our elders! In our fellowship there are many who have been through similar situations to the ones we... [Read More..]
